3 ways to post video content on Instagram

There are two crucial things to understand when it comes to posting video on Instagram.

If you want, feel free to jump straight to the full version of this blog.

Firstly, in the company’s own words, Instagram is no longer a square photo-sharing app. In its insta-infancy, it was all about putting vintage filters on beautiful photos of your breakfast. But the social media landscape is becoming increasingly video-centric, and Instagram is no exception.

The second thing to realise is that ‘posting a video on Instagram’ can mean a bunch of different things, depending on how you’re doing it. Instagram has a habit of ‘borrowing’ features from other platforms, from Hipstamatic to BeReal – and as a result there are a LOT of different ways you can use video with Instagram.

In this guest blog post for Status Social, I look at Reels, Stories and Carousels – the three main uses of video on Instagram. Find out when and how you should be using each one, the different video formats and durations they favour, and some simple tips for getting started.

If you’ve not already been posting content on Instagram for your brand or organisation, now’s the time to get started! Have a look through my top tips and you’re good to go.

I've been producing digital content since 2012, primarily for flagship BBC brands like Blue Peter and BBC News. Now I run Studio 91 Media, a video production agency on a mission: to create content that is good for platforms, good for people and good for the planet. When I'm not behind a camera, I can often be found playing cello at weddings or riding a three-wheeled cargo bike called Babs.
